The mystery of pink pipes
Initially I thought they were installed in the place of Berlin Wall in remembrance, but they are found everywhere. Turns out the city is built on swampy grounds, and these pipes help stabilize the land. It’s like the modern Roman aqueducts, and adds another color to this vibrant city.

Fünfter Tag in Berlin

Went grocery shopping in the morning with Erik in Moabit. In this district, there are lots of shops run by Turks and Arabs in the area, together with the major German retailers, one can find everything one needs to cook almost any cuisine. I am constantly amazed how people from virtually everywhere gather in this cosmopolitan city, yet speak German with one another😅 By the way I do feel like I hear Yankee English more often here than in London. In a way, Berlin is more Americanized.

I spent some time surfing through the flat listings available for short term rental, and looks like there are only a handful of places I can move into. I had before considered Kreuzberg as the ideal place for commute, but this is not London. It’s not that crowded even during the rush hours, and looks like the workplace has a flexible work hours, my first time in such environment. I was told to come in at 11am on my first day, so that tells something about when most of my colleagues get to the office.

Somehow every corner of Berlin have turned into a trendy district over the recent years. Apart from Charlottenburg which used to be the wealthy center of West Berlin, all the other districts surrounding Mitte had once been a place nobody wants to live in, now every new comer is trying to get a space there. Erik told me the neighborhoods such as Kreuzberg surrounding where the wall once stood had been the cheapest area in the city. The eastern end of West Berlin has turned into center of the city overnight, what a times must have it been for the resident of both sides. Enough with history jargon, it seems like the former East is still relatively cheaper and modern. Gonna check out Prenzlauer Berg tomorrow. (at Quartier Schützenstraße)
