Ich habe noch eine weitere Nummer.
While traveling I rarely buy souvenirs, none but two, post cards & SIM cards. Post cards I usually send it right away, not sure whether my nephew even reads them, but SIM cards are tiny and offer insight into the current state of telecoms infrastructure in the country as well as relative cost of communication. Not to I admit I’m addicted to my mobile, having a connection on the road gives me flexibility since it allows me to make last minute bookings. So looks I have travelled with 16 different phone numbers, with the cheapest one costing less than $3 including 2GB of data in Cambodia, and Carlos Slim’s America Movil ended up being the network I used in 4 countries.
Vierter Tag in Berlin
I fell asleep last night while trying to choose which photo to post. Haven’t seen much in this city yet, and nothing really stood out as particularly interesting so far. Perhaps it’s because my mind is occupied with deciding where I should live. Received a welcome package of 10 different documents/contracts from the company handling my payroll, only then I realized there are tons more I need to sort out. Looking for a new job has become my annual ritual so I have a fairly solid procedure written out for me to follow, but I see the need for another checklist for relocation, in case I move to another country after this job. So far:
✔️job offer
✔️flight
✔️temporary accommodation
✔️phone number
✔️bank account
Opening a bank account was the one that took longest when I moved to London, as I didn’t have a proof of address nor job. Luckily here, with advent of FinTech startups, from wide range of online banks available, N26 seemed like a good choice. This mobile bank has been on featured on headlines like every week, I’d long been curious after using Revolut for a year while traveling.
Got 5 documents left to read & sign, then just a few more steps remaining:
- flat search: also there’re startups serving this niche market for short-mid term rentals
- Einwohnermeldeamt (residency registration)
- double tax relief forms in DE & GB (processed by the payroll company)
- medical insurance
So this is it, the last weekday before my first day at work! (at Berlin, Germany)
