Everyone loves Thailand, Bali, wherever else flooded with tourists, and so do I. But if anyone asks me where is my favorite destination in Southeast Asia, I take it that she is asking for a recommendation, thus my answer would be Penang. Why? It’s just so different from anywhere else and there is so much narrative in this town.
45. George Town, Penang, Malaysia
After two ferry rides of about 6 hours total, here I am for the second time. Besides Queenstown, Penang is another place I revisited after my previous odyssey. Something about this town holds a special place in my memory. It’s a melting pot of Malays, Chinese, Indians & the Westerners. Like in Singapore, all four languages are heard everywhere, not to mention the street foods from these different groups. It’s like Jerusalem of the East, and Armenians also have a presence here too! What intrigued me particularly in Jerusalem was the Armenian quarter, I get a glimpse of their culture, history in many places I visit. As I would like my next new 12 countries to be more carefully considered, meaningful places, Armenia would be a good contender amongst them.
