The divided, supposedly international city, holy site to three religions

3. Jerusalem, Israel

I generally try to prepare for the next destination by checking out the map to pick the hotel location, transportation, et cetera, but Jerusalem, for it being a special city, took me by surprise. Firstly, contrary to the border lines drawn on the map, the old City is also controlled by Israel. It is actually 1949 armistice line most people believe it to be the border between the two states, but the reality seems to be Israeli force occupies pretty much all of West Bank, with the Palestinian towns sieged like in a cage. No wonder there was no border control while driving along Dead Sea. Anyways, later learned from the MOOC on modern Middle East that the government under Ben Gurion intentionally didn’t advance beyond the old city walll in fear of international condemnation. These grfolks know how to play politics. Jerusalem was a very special city nevertheless, and the city will continue to grow. It is one place in Israel I may want to revisit one day.. if I can stand the interrogation at the border
