Figures of Aspiration
There have been numerous figures of great deeds in the past: militaristic and political figures, ranging from Julius Ceasar, Cao Cao, Bonaparte Napoleon, who are equally criticized for their cruelty much as their brilliance; philosophical figures such as Socrates, Confucius and René Descartes, most of whom had struggled throughout their lives; then there are people who excel in arts and technology, like Leonardo Da Vinci and more recently Steve Jobs As civilization progress and knowledge of the past accumulate, we as species as a whole become much capable beings and this leads to even more powerful leading figures. These super figures not only have access to far greater knowledge but also quickly learn from the mistakes their predecessors made.
To make this concise, I would like to pick three great figures of this day, all of them entrepreneurs in technology, which I believe is where one can make the greatest impact in his or her lifetime. James Dyson is admirable for his dedication to his inventions no matter how long or much resources take to invent. The present economy is full of companies trying to make cheap mediocre products that maximizes profit; however, for our living standards to progress over time, we need more inventors like Dyson and be supportive of finding more. And Mark Zuckerberg is doing exactly that. By paving the way to extend knowledge to every individual on the planet, he has a mission to bring the best out everyone, ~~even though Facebook can be somewhat distracting from focusing~~ Plus, with all the wealth he has accumulated in such young age, he shows what entrepreneurs should do to benefit the society after success. Lastly, Elon Musk is another kind of his own. As the true serial entrepreneur, he keeps going after greater challenges after a series of failures, yet solving probably the most needed and hardest problems we face in our times. From him, we can learn to push our limits, self-teach about anything that we feel motivated for, achieve through perseverance and actually make a difference in the world.
What all three of them have in common is that they each have taken a path where nobody has gone before. In the world today where everything is changing so rapidly, we find as many new problems as we solve them, and for our civilization to improve in a long run, more of us will have to take lead the way towards what no one dared in the past.
