It was probably a mistake to follow these ladies, but it was also a good decision to turn back.
47. Sapa, Vietnam
I should have probably sensed it from the weather conditions in Hanoi. Most people visit Sapa to enjoy the scenic walks along the rice terraces, but it’s early spring plus they have single harvest rotation here, so no rice cultivation was to be found around this time. It offered a different kind of majestic view though, that mystical feeling when walking through the haze. It’s probably worth visiting another time when it is warmer and sunny, but I would wait until tourism becomes more developed here. Perhaps there will be quicker, more convenient connection through the Chinese border soon. It’s already too touristy and the local indigenous people have been spoiled and became greedy. Masai’s in Kenya, Bedouins in Jordan, now the H'mongs in Sapa, wherever I expect the more cordial hospitality, often leaves me return with frustration what the relative poverty and tourism have done that them. Where should I go to experience the genuine indigenous tribes with a proper sense of xenia?
