24 hours behind the great firewall. Even for a day, life can get very inconvenient without email, Google maps & Facebook messenger. Clearly these companies will not disappear anytime soon, and despite the language barriers, I frkin luv China, I would like to return for a longer visit next time, so I better come up with an alternative solution to these services by then.
52. Shenzhen, China
So this is the last stop before flying back to Europe, more precisely London Heathrow. Whopping £200 for the one-way flight with overnight layover in Shenzhen. One of my primary motivations for wanting to visit Hong Kong was to feel the atmosphere in Shenzhen, and this was economical way to spend time in the city. Once a fishing village with a population under half a million, it now seems as vibrant as the city across the water.
My third visit to the country, but the first to explore the city by myself and first to experience the great firewall. With Google maps cache reset, and upon playing around with open street maps & Bing for a bit, I gave up on relying on my mobile all together. How ironic is it to go analog in this city at the frontier of latest technology. Although there wasn’t anything particularly appealing about this city, I wished I stayed here for a few more days. It was probably more due to my general interest in China, as all my visits so far have been no longer than 3 days. Hoping to take time to explore across the continent on the newly built high speed railway on next visit.
