Day 55 Koh Tao
So the real diving session begins! As pleasant as it seemed on the shores, I was shocked to find what I found underwater was quite the contrary of what I expected. Well, the water was clean, very blue seen from the surface, but no particular organisms of interest are to be found. Unlike in Gili islands, no turtles, baby sharks or any tropical colored ones. I was partly glad that this was not my first diving spot, yet that made Koh Tao probably the best place for training. According to the local history, due to its remoteness from the mainland, Koh Tao once became a de facto prison for all criminals in Thailand. And that’s when excessive fishing began, eventually resorted to hunting turtles, not sure how they were cooked. Well, Ko Tao literally means island of turtles, it’s a shame that no turtles are to be found now, but maybe someday they will return.
